Well, the Royals exhibition is now over and a memory itself. It was amazing to meet all the people and hear all the stories and thoughts about the high street. There were some great stories and really passionate views about the changing visual landscape! I heard stories like the hysterical naked lady bathing in the mud on the beach and escorted off by police, only to cause a commotion in the old Vic circus crossroad traffic when the policeman holding her down fell of her in a near accident on the pedestrian crossing! What a palaver! Or Tessa who used to work in Planters coffee shop, where you had to make a perfect coffee or you had to pay for it out of your wages and the late great Odeon (one of two of the largest Odeon’s in the country apparently!) as one of the lovely aisle attendents who sold the ice cream in the wrapped paper that you had to put in the cones yourself. For those of you that are interested I recorded all these conversations and will be editing them together for later use – maybe to put inside the model I’m making of the high street, maybe to make a documentary for the Southend Timeline website...I’m not quite decided yet – maybe you’ve got some suggestions? Why not email me and let me know what you think, or just to tell me your memories or thoughts about the high street.
