Very first in-store at South records TODAY!
A somewhat significant event! The very first in-store at South records, Queens Rd, 15th May: 5.30 - Barrence Whitfield & the Savages play a short set for free before heading to The Railway Hotel for a full-on gig tonight. South are making a statement about the level and activity of their musical bent by showcasing this hybridised genre-clash act. I'll be there filming for the live event so see you there!

Dave Woodcock supporting My Life Story @ Shepherd's Bush!

"Dave woodcock and his band have been offered the opportunity to support Southend favourites My Life Story at Shepherd's Bush Empire on May 31st. This is obviously a really big deal as it is such a high profile gig and such a prestigous venue. Trouble is we need to get a coach load of people up there and with ticket prices at £15 and coach £10-£15 we would be asking people for around £25. We need to gauge interest to see if it is worth going ahead with it. I am also trying to find sponsorship which will bring the cost down.
If you would be up for this then message me and if you know of a possible sponsor please do let me know.

Life's A Drag - How it all began!
Life's a drag came about from a book I wrote years ago, roughly based on my life. People had always said “why haven't you written a TV show about it?”. It was never really something I had thought about, to be honest. I had written various scripts for theatre before, but never TV.
Anyway I started working at a studio and found myself sitting around for hours upon end waiting for clients and getting bored. So one day I decided to attempt to write a TV Script and I started writing the pilot episode.
Once I started writing I couldn’t stop and the more I wrote, the more ideas came into my head. So after a couple of months of re-write’s, I thought I’d see how it sounded with some actors. The people I first asked were not available but after speaking to friends from previous projects I started to find a cast.
The first cast member was James Dandridge, who I had meet while taking part in a local stage production of ‘Allo Allo’. Next was my dear friend Rachael Linnen, who I’d worked with over 10 years ago.
I was struggling to find the right person for the final main cast member when James Dandridge mentioned a friend, who I auditioned and was so impressed with that I casted her immdiately. So, Tina Louise Day join the cast as the final main character. I decided to play the character based on me.

Breaking the Chains!
This charity provide affordable used furniture and appliances with 6 months guarantee on mended electrical appliances including white goods. I was talking to them at their stall in Southend High Street and they are apparently doing a great trade, especially in Southend. They even collect from your door!

Turning Grey Spaces into Green Spaces!
Hi!
Do you have a local spot that is an eyesore? Would you like to see it turned into a green space that can be shared by your local community?
Here's the plan:
We turn local concrete laden empty spaces into temporary or permanent green spaces for recreation, veg growing, local events, pop up business ideas for local entrpeneurs, or nything else that benefits the community and local culture. The public send in photos of spaces they would like to see reimagined as green spaces for their community – we create a project development plan, find sponsorship, match the funding with crowd-funding, get the permission from the authorities and land owners. Then volunteers are found and it is actioned.
The idea is to keep it simple. Spaces need to be cleared, greenery added, and or reworked, and then maintained and used for the available time period, if not permanently, depending on the success of each space. It only take the imagination and effort of the community to get these spaces back in use, and improve them for the land owners in the long term.
If you have any ideas for spaces you think could be used for the community, send in a photo or two of the space to agencysouthend@gmail.com and we'll get them up on the blog for further discussion!

New Growth!
AS Spring is in the air and is conjuring up images of new growth, I decided to start work on a new project that has been hibernating away in the far recesses for a while now, after working on a project recently involving the setting up of a community allotment in Southchurch with some green-fingered friends of mine.
The basic idea for the allotment was to provide training for local people wanting to learn how to grow food without the full responsibility of a full plot, to help get them started on the learning curve. This is a project with lots of potential, but it occurred to me that many people cant get to the allotment and maybe don't have time, so, by default, could not be involved. So, I came up with a different but related idea.
Central to this project and my idea is that people have access to fresh, local food, be it their own or someone elses, as in the Stock Exchange Project that I set up a few years back (which will be starting again soon at Growing Together by the way: See my facebook page for details) In the same way this is a project focussed on people sharing produce and making the most out of their growing spaces. However, this time there is a difference. I am aiming to set up a network of local residence garden plots that will be maintained by a small team of green-fingered individuals, to grow fruit and veg in residents gardens and then to provide these residents with a weekly box of produce from what is harvested.
The veg grown will be gathered and shared by us and the rest sold locally to local independent cafes and restaurants to enable the project to thrive. It's only just started but there seems to be a lot of interest. In any case we are starting small by initially operating in the ward in which I live - the Victoria Ward, which spans a considerable space and includes over 11,000 residents over 68.35 hectares! That's quite a lot of potential green areas in there.
So, I'm going to print some flyers and hand these out around the ward to see how many sunny plots I can find with owners who like the idea and want to get involved! If you know anyone in the Victoria Ward let them know about the project and ask them to send an email to agencysouthend@gmail.com for more information or to arrange a visit by one of our team!

The Fantastic Food Exchange:
Thanks to everyone that turned out at Metal today for the first Fantastic Food Exchange was a big success. We had no idea how the event would turn out so it was amazing to see everyone turn up with all kinds of foraged, self-made and grown produce, from jams to nuts to ...a children's bicycle seat attachment (swapped for cider!). The weather was also perfect, which helps these things. By 11.00 most of the trades had been made and I had myself a treasure trove of treats which meant one less trip to the dreaded supermarket, with the added bonus of meeting some really interesting people. I was particularly impressed by the stall populated by entirely foraged food placed in market-style boxes, adding a professional and colourful aesthetic to the event. All in I managed to swap 6 apple pies, made with locally foraged blackberries and heritage apples from a local orchard, 4 bags of organic potatoes and 6 bottles of elderberry syrup, made from local elderberries and this is what I got in return:

An Autumn Art Auction / Residency-Swap
So, I had the idea of staging a local art auction to raise money for local artists to make a living but also to set up a fund to help our local artists by paying their travel expenses when undertaking residencies internationally. The idea is that the auction takes a small commission and uses this money to help artists swap their places of residence with an artist from another country, inside or outside the EU. The residencies will last for one week only because restricting them in this way makes it possible for a wider range of artists to gain experiences of residencies, be they in employment, parents etc. Artists will be chosen on merit alone, with no ideological conditions, as the object is not to prescribe the outcome but allow artists the freedom to respond to the experience in their own way. Any work created for these residencies will be exhibited in a duel exhibition, contrasting the artists work. This way we can allow a cultural interaction to happen in a more organic way, as well as allowing artists to express themselves outside the usual prescribed commission-based opportunities.
I have been inconversation with a few possible venues in Southend and hopefully will have more information soon but feel free to comment and give opinions of how you think this idea might work.

Taylor & Harlow Model Makers Exhibition
You might recognise one of these pieces on display as part of Taylor & Harlow Model Maker's exhibition, which opened last week in Southend Libraries foyer space. The exhibition is a showcase of recently completed works by the pair of local sculptors and is an impressive display of the diversity of mediums they are capable of working in. The library foyer exhibition space is fairly basic but out of the exhibitions I've seen of late this one injects an otherwise dull area with a creative vibe that is easy on the eye but also conveys an artistic depth.
